-------
The next morning Jimmy was busy at work doing the prep work back in the kitchen. Dolly, his first-shift waitress, was out front filling the ketchup bottles. There were two tables she was attending to every now and again. Jimmy had already cooked their orders: breakfast food for both tables.
When the clock showed ten he went to the front to be near the cash register where the restaurant’s phone lay, and he picked up the receiver wearily and then dialed the number of the owner.
After ringing for a few moments, the other line was finally picked up. “Yes,” and older sounding woman answered.
“This is Jimmy, down at the diner.”
“Oh, yes. Jimmy. I was going to call you today, or actually yesterday, but I got busy and…”
“We were robbed again last night,” he interrupted, knowing that she might go off on a tangent for ten minutes.
There was only silence from the other end.
Jimmy sighed again and recounted the night’s events, emphasizing that no one got hurt and there was neither damage nor money stolen. He paused for a moment, expecting to hear praise for his quick thinking and positive resolution to the issue, and he had hoped that such praise would soften the news that he was out another employee, but then he heard what he was not expecting to hear.
“Jimmy,” she said, “I’m selling the diner.”
His heart skipped a beat and as if on cue a strange twisting feeling grew in the pit of his stomach.
Without even waiting for a response, for she never really even tried to make a connection to her manager on a personal level, she continued, saying, “Some guys want to open a Mexican restaurant there and they offered me a decent price for that old shack, and I need the money so I accepted.”
Jimmy winced at the reference to the diner as a ‘shack,’ for he had worked there for almost ten years and managed it for the last six of those. He knew that the Latino population had exploded in this part of Missouri, mostly bypassing violence-ridden St. Louis, but he never expected it to affect him personally.
“What about me?” was all he could say in reply - and he was immediately embarrassed for saying those words, as if he were a helpless child about to be abandoned.
“Oh, I have to let you go,” she answered matter-of-factly, “and I think the new owners might be bringing in their own people, but you can talk to them. They’ll be in tomorrow to start taking measurements for their remodeling and all. After three more days you’ll be putting the last deposit from the ‘til in the bank, and then, well, that’s it then.”
Jimmy was speechless. In an instant a vision of all the bills he had to pay swirled before his mind’s eye. He would be hard pressed to find a job in these parts, for all the jobs for only high school graduates were filled with immigrants who in turn only hired their own. He could never hope to stay on in yet another ethnic-owned business.
